Keep Your Goals on Track

If you want to keep your goals on track, it’s easy. All you need is an alien baby.

Extra Terrestrial

Have you ever noticed how goals are like toxic ooze? No? Me neither. I guess that’s because they don’t eat your skin off and make you lose your hair.

But one thing that goals are for sure is extra terrestrial. I mean, there are things that are terrestrial – like from the earth… like… everything I guess, and there are things that seem so much more earthly… like dirt and trees and stuff. Those things are extra terrestrial.

Brains
I get it. He doesn’t get it. Still, it’s hard to argue with him on this one. Semantically, he’s correct. Let’s just chalk this up to “English is crazy” and move on.

Life is similar. There are things we do to live our lives. This is the normal stuff. This is the stuff that gets us normal results. But when we plan – when we set goals to attain better results – that’s the good stuff – the extra. When you keep your goals on track, that’s when you hit the extra terrestrial.

Brains
I’m totally lost too. Let’s see if he can bring it home. At least one thing we know for sure – regardless of whether we get to the destination, it’s going to be a wild ride. Oh, crap. I’m starting to sound like him.

Other Worldly Results

I feel like I might have gotten really lost in my metaphor, so let me try again. Just doing all the normal stuff in life will get you normal results. If you just write when you feel like it, you will write exactly how much you feel like writing. What is your daily routine? Just writing when the mood strikes you?

But if you use goals, you will write how much you decide to write. If you have a goal of writing 500 words a day, whether you feel like it or not, you will write 15,000 words a month, give or take (Thanks, February). Goals take your creativity and make it extra.

Goals are super powerful. That’s why you must have goals. Their results are other worldly. In order to see their power you have to keep your goals on track, just like alien babies.

Here’s how.

Tracking Your Alien Babies

When you first have an alien baby, it’s weird. They are barky and hairy and they seem to want to bite everything. They yip and they growl… Oh, wait. Those aren’t alien babies. Those are puppies. I should never write so close to the toxic lake.

When you train your pup to behave, you have to have a consistent plan. The more consistent you are, the sooner they create good habits.

The same is true with goals. When you do them every day, you find success. When you track them each day, you find extra-terrestrial success.

Tracking Your UFOs

Keep your goals on track by tracking your goals. If you want to write 500 words a day, take a step forward by tracking how many words you write, and do it daily. It’s easy, and it’s fun to see how much you accomplish.

If you want to enjoy a life that’s extra, define your goals and track your progress. It will be the difference between a stain on your carpet or a UFO.

I’m so sorry. I think I need to get some fresh air.
